Fun with Graham Crackers, Icing, and Candy

We were supposed to have lunch and make gingerbread houses with Ellie one afternoon before David came home for Christmas vacation, but Ryan came down with an 102 degree fever the night before so that didn't end up happening. Luckily, we were able to reschedule it for the following week, and since David was home, we went over for dinner rather than lunch.

Lisa made barbecue pork sandwiches for the adults and I made Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer peanut butter and honey sandwiches for the kids. Aren't they cute??

I made these sandwiches last year as well, but I definitely like the way they turned out better this year using regular sized chocolate chips for the eyes rather than the mini ones.

After dinner, Ryan and Ellie got to work decorating their gingerbread houses. Ellie was really into it this year; however, Ryan wasn't too keen on the idea of wasting perfectly delicious candy on a house. He preferred putting the candy to good use in his mouth, though, he did finally decorate one side {with some coaxing}. Daddy then helped finish the rest while Ryan enjoyed some more candy. That is part of the fun of making gingerbread houses, right?!

Santa!

The kiddos with their finished houses :)

And the fun wasn't over! Before we headed home, R and E had popcorn and watched Prep and Landing, while David and Adam talked about guy things and Lisa and I gossiped :) It is so nice to have friends that we all three enjoy hanging out with!!

Although I was disappointed at the time, I am now glad that Ryan ended up being sick for our original gingerbread-house-making-playdate because having to reschedule allowed us the opportunity to spend some fun family time together with another great family {and I got to enjoy a day full of cuddling with my sick boy ... a double bonus}! Thanks Lichfields!

Surprise!

Saturday afternoon {after Ryan's "friend" birthday party}, I threw a surprise 30th birthday party for David :)

I really didn't think David had any idea about the party, and when he walked in the door, his face confirmed my suspicions. He was shocked and told me later that he almost turned around and walked back out the door because he didn't know who to talk to first :) Luckily he didn't do that {although it would have been funny}, and his shocked face turned to a huge grin within seconds. He was on cloud nine the rest of the afternoon and night!

Waiting patiently for the guest of honor :)

SURPRISE!

I will admit that I felt slightly overwhelmed in the weeks leading up to our day of partying {not that the parties were that much work on there own, but when you add in the fact that Christmas was just one week away, it was a lot to juggle all at once}, but I am so glad that I decided to have this party for David!! It was awesome and he was SO thrilled, which made all the hard work and party planning worth it!! Not to mention that this was the first birthday party that has ever been thrown for just him {he shares a birthday with his older-by-one-year brother}, as well as the first and only surprise party he has ever had :) Again, SO glad I had it!!

A fun little treat for the birthday boy from Laura and Daniel ...
a 30 sucks lollipop bouquet :)

We got home from Ryan's party about 11:45 AM, and hung out until about 1:45 PM. Ryan opened presents and had lunch, and then David took a little nap {at which point I started pacing because there was so much to do before 2:45 when everyone started arriving, but I couldn't do any of it with him still home} until his good friend Chris picked him up to go to lunch. Once David was gone, things were crazy as I scrambled to get everything ready ... in one hour! Luckily, I had LOTS of help standing by -- David's sister came down from Charlotte and got here about 5 minutes after he left, and my sister and mom were right behind her {and my dad and brother were already here since we currently live with them}, AND all came bearing the items that I had 'assigned' them to bring/pick-up earlier in the week when I realized there was NO way I could do everything by myself in the amount of time I had to get ready.

Chris did a fantastic job getting David out of the house
and back again ... without ruining the surprise!!

I bought tons of 30th birthday decorations at Party City, and had Rachel bring pictures of David over the last 30 years to hang up. I decided to go with a Mexican-ish theme for the food {I wanted it to be something David would like, even though it turned out he wasn't hungry since he ate his heart out at lunch}, which was delicious! We had:
  • Chicken nachos with shredded lettuce, sour cream, guacamole and salsa on the side
  • Tennessee Caviar
  • Guacamole-Goat Cheese Toast
  • 7 Layer Taco Dip
  • a spicy Velveeta cheese dip
  • a veggie tray
  • Sausage and cheese stuffed filo dough cups
  • a Rosalyn Carter cheese ring with crackers
  • Sangria, Bud Light, Coke, Mountain Dew, and Root Beer to drink, and
  • a cookie cake from the Great American Cookie Company

Ryan was there too! He watched Cars upstairs for a lot of the
party, but came down to sing "Happy Birthday" and have
blue icing :)

There ended up being 24 adults {and 4 kids} at the party, which was a perfect number, and included 3 of David's best friends from college, a great friend from the Army {Ft. Benning and Ft. Bragg days} and his equally great wife, our wonderful ex-neighbors, a good friend that worked with David here, and our awesome families.

A big thanks to everyone who celebrated with us and made David's 30th birthday so special, AND to everyone who helped me pull it off!!

And for a few of us, the party continued into the night. We sure had fun catching up with the Cleeks {made me miss Ft. Bragg just a little}, playing Sequence, and braving the chilly night air for a few more games of corn hole!

David has since told me that we should have a surprise birthday party for him every year! It was that fun!! :)

Ryan's {Friend} Birthday Party

We had a SporTykes Birthday Party for Ryan {he took a 12 week SporTykes class this fall} and 9 of his friends on Saturday morning at a nearby church gym. It was fun and chaotic!! What is to be expected from 10 two and three year olds though?!?!

Coach Shannon was there to play age-appropriate soccer activities with the kids for the first 45 minutes of the party. Unfortunately, Ryan wasn't in the best of moods {he is not a morning person and has been fighting a cold for the last week or so} so he participated when he wanted and did his own thing the rest of the time. And his own thing, more often than not, involved Ellie. However, this was true for a lot of the kids, especially the boys. I don't think poor Coach Shannon ever managed to get all 10 kids doing the same thing at the same time. They all seemed to have a blast though, which is all that matters.

Trying to get Mr. Happy :)

The happy birthday huddle :)

Then for the last half hour we visited and had goldfish, apple slices, ice cream cone cupcakes, and apple juice. Ryan didn't care for anything but the juice {cupcake included}, and would have taken 10 juice boxes if we had let him.

Top row: Camryn, Anya, Alyssa, Harrison, Nathaniel.
Front row: Evie, Ellie, Ryan, Conall, Matthew.

Seeing the smile on Ryan's face as we sang "Happy Birthday" to him {with his assistance :)} was priceless though!! And luckily a friend captured it on video so here is a little slice of preciousness, for your viewing pleasure ...

Everyone got to take home a cool goody bag and a balloon, in addition to a fun soccer stamp, sticker, and sucker they got from Coach Shannon. The birthday boy also got a SporTykes trophy {his first one}, and lots of nice gifts from his generous friends, which we had fun opening when we got home!! It was a memorable party!
